In Maharashtra's Panegao village, a stunning story of community action was scripted when people banded together to fight a 20-year-long battle against illegal mining by the sand mafia.

With weather conditions becoming favourable, few villages in the south of Karnataka are now experimenting by growing strawberries, among other exotic vegetables. Some speak of harvesting up to 400 kgs of the fruit per day.

Dr Ujjwal Chavan, Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, has run a massive water conservation initiative to rejuvenate the river and improve groundwater tables in several Maharashtra villages, including Dhamangaon, where he is originally from. His efforts have benefited around 30,000 farmers so far.

Samir Bordoloi's Assam-based initiative — SPREAD NE, trains 2,500 farmers and 326 'Green Commandos' using scientific and sustainable methods of farming.
