Madhusmita Prusty, Smita Mohanty, Swagatika Rao and Snehanjali Sethi come from different walks of life, but found common ground in caring for and cremating the unclaimed dead in Odisha.
After Himanshu Kalia nearly lost his father due to delayed treatment, he and his wife Twinkle started free ambulance services to ferry those in need of urgent medical attention across Delhi
"I spent over a month frantically searching for my son. And finally, one day I found his dead body in a sack, devoured by stray animals. I decided never to let another soul go through that torment," says the cycle mechanic, who was recently awarded the Padma Shri.
"For the last 20 years. I've seen her serving the poor. She runs a free ambulance, gives them food & medicines, and conducts their final rites, spending money from her own pocket. We call her 'Iron Lady' because she's doing such a tough job,” says Dr Vipin Kaushal of PGIMER, Chandigarh. #Respect
Imagine the plight of those who, for reasons unknown, have no one to conduct their last rites. This is the space that Uravugal fills. The trust also works towards rescuing and rehabilitating aged, homeless people.
