We meet Shahid Bikapurwala, a resident of Gujarat's Kevadi village, who runs Ubha Seth's Shop, a unique general store that runs round the clock and has no doors, locks, and sometimes, even a shopkeeper.

“The city I left as a young boy had changed. I came back to poverty, apathy, and a general sense of disillusionment. No one should go to bed at night on a hungry stomach. When I meet my maker I need to have my answers ready and be able to look at him and tell him I did all I could to make a difference,” he says.

“The first three-four months were very tough. The chemotherapy sessions were very intense. We also learnt that the chances of recovery are as high as 90 per cent in children below the age of 14,” says 48-year-old Monica.

“I am a fighter. I do not give up, and am almost always ready to take on whatever comes my way.”

In such a tragedy, one can only imagine the plight of the marginalised and the helpless, who were most impacted. The sad reality is that even under such circumstances, the necessary support rarely reaches them, grossly increasing their time to recovery.
