“On 16th July, the link went live at 1:30 p.m. and we tweeted about it everywhere and it blew up. When the link was initially set up, it was to raise Rs. 30,000 until 28 July. But we ended up raising Rs. 5.9 lakh in a matter of 24 hours!”
Located in the Thanjavur district and spread across 564 acres, the lake was responsible for irrigating 6,000 acres of agricultural land. However, due to constant misuse and exploitation by the soil mafia, it did not hold sufficient water.
"When I reached the spot, there was water up to the waist at the entrance. However, I just walked in and managed to reach the third floor flat," said Constable Gite.
The ministry assured the relief material will be delivered in multiple consignments. Items include rice, pulses, sugar, salt, cooking oil, tea, ready to eat noodles, biscuits, mosquito nets etc.
The rains may have paralysed the city, but failed to break the spirit of good samaritans who extended help in every way they could to help fellow Mumbaikars.
