Struggling to meet ends, Jodharam Patel’s father gave him an ultimatum—either score above 70 per cent in boards to secure a stable job or move to Mumbai and work as a labourer. Here’s how he wrote his own fate.

The 25-year-old’s story is akin to every sportsperson in India who didn’t have a godfather and struggled before garnering national limelight.

Since they take in 25 students each in classes 11 and 12, the name 50 Villagers came about. A practising doctor, Dr Saran did not see himself take up teaching. "However," he says, “it was the circumstances and the education system that made me become a teacher and mentor.”

A whiteboard, markers, and a duster for the teachers and a carpet laid on the ground for them to sit on, 15 such study centres across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and recently, Rajasthan, are providing free-of-cost education for slum and street kids since 2013.
