Kerala's KR Jayan has grown over 44 varieties of jackfruit in public spaces across villages in the state, earning the Plant Genome Saviour Community Award.
Goa-based Sairaj Dhond started Wakao Foods during the COVID-19 lockdown, to sell jackfruit products as an alternative form of meat. The venture has many vegan meat products such as Teriyaki Jack, Butter Jack, BBQ Jack and Jack Burger Patty.
Kochi’s James was inspired to create this jackfruit flour after former President Kalam asked him to include jackfruit in people’s diet without changing their eating habits
“It can be used to cut branches, douse fires in very high places by the fire department and even save someone who is drowning – there are multiple uses for it,” says the former professor at Kerala Agricultural University.
In India, it is states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu that have professed their love for the Jackfruit by declaring it as their official state fruit. Karnataka even has a proverb: ‘Eat the jackfruit when you’re hungry, the mango when you’re full.’
Currently residing in Cochin, Annie started uploading videos regularly on Youtube from 2015 bolstered by the encouraging comments of the viewers. Annie says that with each new video she makes, she feels the same kind of excitement and happiness she did when she started.
