About 50,000 plastic containers are used on a daily basis in the city, and what is worse, about 90 per cent of these show up in biodegradable waste collected by waste collectors.

“I did whatever it took in the beginning. I ran a tea stall for a while, and with the money I made, I started something new and so on. People in worse situations came to me, and that kept me going.”

In their initial proof-of-concept testing, the researchers have managed to lower the temperature inside their device by six degrees Celsius, when compared to the temperature outside.

“I hardly understood the language and did not know anyone in the city, but returning wasn’t an option since I was penniless. So I did the only thing I could--I decided to stay on and try my luck."
