Bhubaneshwar-based Debashree Padhi, is the brain behind developing a solution that addresses two of India’s biggest air pollution causes, biomass fuels and stubble burning.

“While the senior citizens entertain everyone with songs, stories and even ‘jhumelo’ dancing at times, the younger men, women and children sweep the streets, pick up plastic waste and discard them in designated dustbins.”

The eco-friendly fuel alternative made from plastic can be used can be used to fuel generators, industrial boilers, and furnaces, among others.

The waste management solution provided by Shruti Ahuja is helping bulk waste generators across India lower their carbon footprints and save on gas bills!

Given that Bengaluru airport generates a large quantum of waste each day, BIAL will use the plastic waste collected through this drive to pave its internal roads. “The #PlasticBeku campaign is one initiative that we believe can change the world,” says Chandramouli.

“I was 9 when I got interested in waste management, thanks to a community service project that I took up in school. While the project got over, my interest remained, and I have continued to find solutions to the growing plastic problem.”

After Prabhakar Mankoji from Karnataka used vermicompost in his farm to practice organic farming, the soil quality improved and food output doubled!

Their goal was to demonstrate that despite large numbers of revellers, the event can be zero-waste and eco-friendly. An ideal zero-waste event sends nothing to landfills and incinerators.

The once dump yard, today boasts of trees like pomegranate, sweet lime, guava, and also has plants like lemon, lady finger, tomato, black plum, lemon and bitter gourd.

“Many a times, we switch on our motor and forget to switch it off. And, by the time we realise that the tank is overflowing, a lot of water gets wasted. This has now been avoided,” says a happy user of this water-saving solution! #LiveGreen #SaveWater
