Students of Samta Hindi Vidyalaya, Turbhe initiated a cleanliness drive on October 2nd to make a point. Instead of blaming the authorities and municipal corporations, one should set an example by cleaning the mounds of garbage.

Inspired by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and its focus on eliminating open defecation, Rashmii Tiwarii, an architect from Hyderabad, reuses PET bottles to construct public restrooms.

Some still feel it is an obligatory duty of the BMC to collect waste and manage it, but societies like Raheja Atlantis aren’t wasting time arguing.

“Think about how we feel when we sit down to eat our lunch or even cook a meal for our family. We use the same hands to segregate your waste and then to eat and cook. Would you be able to handle it?”

Myriam Shanker and Arushi Gupta are working to solve a waste crisis in villages around Bengaluru. Thanks to them, the waste generated from 450 households are carefully segregated, collected and eventually recycled – wasting as little waste as possible!

The Waste Samaritan initiative is a door-to-door waste monitoring solution undertaken as a pilot project in Domlur Layout’s ward number 112, with the support of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike.
