The plot in Belapur, Navi Mumbai now has around 250 types of trees and 100 types plants, attracting 25 to 30 species of birds, 30 to 40 varieties of butterflies and numerous insects.
Initially, the family would take weekend trips to Sakleshpur, the quaint hill station in Karnataka known for its plantations and coffee, and live in tents inside the jungle.
With the dedicated efforts of teachers and students alike, the once barren land is now a veritable farm that grows vegetables like brinjal, bottle gourd, spinach, coriander, cucumber, and ridge gourd as well as fruits like banana and papaya.
With the help of committee members, they started the Go Green Campaign on Swachhta Divas, Oct 2, 2017, where their objective was to convert wet kitchen waste into compost and recycle as much dry waste as possible.
The 11-year-old grows over 30-odd types of fruits including fig, pulasan, durian, baraba, gooseberry, custard apple and sapota and most vegetables like Chinese cauliflower, bajji chilli, carrot, beetroot, cabbage, green chilli etc.
The name Midori was selected to honour the Japanese, who with their sheer grit and power of determination rebuilt their nation after the Second World War attacks.
