When US-based Indian Michael Khanna's mother was left stranded in a foreign country due to the COVID-19 lockdown, he set up SOS Global Indians on Facebook to help millions of Indians caught in a similar struggle by providing them with COVID-19 resources, curating immigration and travel rules, and more.
“The most moving moment was the reaction of the villagers on the other side. Their eyes welled up in joy and that was the biggest achievement of the day for us!”
“In situations like these, it’s important to help each other. We can truly overcome such adversity only as a community. By offering my services, I was being a responsible citizen and doing my duty, as well as earning some money.”
The national carrier Air India has been given permission to conduct this operation to bring back Indian citizens from other countries and the passengers will be charged for the ticket prices.
“We pushed the door open and managed to get out. There were a lot of people standing along the sides, some of whom were hooting, catcalling. In fact they were making fun of pretty much everything that was passing by, including us,” recalls Rajeev.
