A Bengaluru couple’s unwavering dedication towards the wellbeing of children of prisoners has changed many lives. Their legacy lives on through their NGO, 'SOCARE, which provides shelter & education.
Boycotted for marrying outside religion, Rajyalakshmi and SMD Khasim from Andhra Pradesh run an NGO called 'Manalo Manam' for underprivileged children, abandoned senior citizens and interfaith couples.
Since they take in 25 students each in classes 11 and 12, the name 50 Villagers came about. A practising doctor, Dr Saran did not see himself take up teaching. "However," he says, “it was the circumstances and the education system that made me become a teacher and mentor.”
The 61-year-old opened her doors to orphaned children and distressed women in 2007 after an incident that changed both Annie and her husband’s life, forever.
"Right from my school days, I wanted to do something for the betterment of girls in our society. The inequality faced by us was very disturbing to me.”
Registered as a formal trust in March 2011, the Good Samaritans is a very small group of medically trained persons who provide basic care, and run a small free pharmacy.
