Painstakingly developed by Dr Bhan, WHO-approved Rotavac drastically lowered the cost of vaccination against diarrhoea — a disease that kills 78,000 infants a year in India and 500,000 globally. #RIP #Tribute
Developed by Bharat Biotech Limited, the Rotavac vaccine was initially prepared through the isolation of the 116E strain of the live virus at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) between 1986 and 1988.
In India, the deadly rotavirus diarrhea causes nearly 1,00,000 deaths among children. The vaccination campaign launched this March aims to curb these deaths.
PM Narendra Modi has launched India's first home-grown Rotavirus vaccine, at a price point of Rs. 63. This makes it the cheapest Rotavirus vaccine globally, and is expected to bring down the high number of deaths caused by the virus in India and around the world.
