An unsung freedom fighter who helped Netaji Bose escape and fought alongside Mahatma Gandhi in the Non-Cooperation movement, Helen Lepcha (also known as Savitri Devi) remains lost in the pages of India's history.

Popularly revered as 'Rani', Gaidinliu was a political and spiritual leader of the Zeliangrong people of the Northeast. She led the revolt against the British rule at a young age of 13 and was imprisoned for 14 years.

The contributions of personalities from the Northeast are often left out when we speak about Independence Day. In our own way, let us right this oversight this time.

Though these little-known revolts were unsuccessful in uprooting the British, they laid the foundation for the struggle that ultimately led to independence.

We remember and honour our freedom fighters as best as we can. But there are many people and their contributions that we have not even heard of. Here is remembering them all and applauding their immense sacrifice.
