Deepmala Pandey, a primary school principal from Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, has been instrumental in getting over 800 disabled students enrolled in schools. She is supported by 400 teachers.
“We were four siblings and making ends meet with my father’s salary was not at all easy. I studied in a school that was around 15 km away from my home and travelled everyday by various modes; which included walking.”
An all-woman team of teachers and staff run the school. And now, the school has broken a stereotype by introducing gender-neutral uniform comprising of short pants and shirts.
"How different would our rural areas be if so many more take up such incredible challenges, instead of their expertise being laid to rest after retirement?," writes a deeply impressed IAS officer Armstrong Pame.
Ever since he retired 24 years earlier, Shri Krishnan Sharma has never missed a single day of teaching. In fact, his conviction has inspired other retired teachers to return to their schools!
“Now, we have started developing codes, too. Our teacher taught us how to make them when we were in Class VI. A lot of research is involved before preparing each video.”
Anand Gopakumar explains that issues with such learning are mainly found in students and freshers coming from the low-income strata of the society—they find it quite challenging to work in teams, for example. And that's where TAP steps in.
