Farmer Nekram Sharma from Himachal Pradesh has switched from chemical-based farming to a 9-crop intercropping method that increases land fertility.

Debashish Sen introduced the System of Rice (or Root) Intensification (SRI) technique to farmers in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in 2006, which was originally invented in the 1980s in Madagascar.

Besides growing 20 varieties of crops ranging from barley to watermelons, this 'Mitti Ka Aadmi' also extracts pashmina from his cashmere goats, teaches organic farming techniques while also running an independent homestay in Ladakh.

Over 2000 families across 53 villages have set up kitchen gardens with a unique sharing policy, ensuring more than 7,500 families are getting fresh, chemical-free vegetables.

"We got tired of playing the part of destroyers of the planet, so we wanted to heal, even if in a very small way.”

This retired teacher from Kerala is helping farmers from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala by sourcing organic veggies from them for his shop.

“If 10,000 people in India resort to food forestry today, it can save 50,000 people in the next few years."

Zero budget natural farming is also helping Krishappa Gowda save 90% water and get high yields throughout the year.
