Standing atop Mt. Saraswati in the Hanle Valley of Changthang, Ladakh, at nearly 14,800 feet above the mean sea level is the Indian Space Observatory—the third highest optical observatory in the world. And this is its story.

Called GROWTH-India, the facility at Hanle is part of a multi-country collaborative initiative known as ‘Global Relay of Observatories Watching Transients Happen’ (GROWTH) to observe transient events in the universe.

The team carried out a systematic search after examining over 300 pictures in a nearly 20-year-old radio survey to discover these GRGs.
