Apart from setting up collection bins and PET bottle-crushing machines at public places in Mumbai, the BMC will soon be starting a toll-free helpline for its new plastic pick-up service.

Within three months from October and December, the Railway managed to clear 30,000 cubic metres of garbage from over five locations - including tracks near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Masjid Bunder, Thane, Parsik tunnel area, and Dharavi.

They not only removed the garbage from the dumping ground near the slum area but also levelled the ground with soil.

Over the years, there have been several attempts to remove the garbage from the dumping site, but to no avail. Officials say the new method is much more efficient than the previous ones.

Concerned citizens came forward and worked almost all night and even into the early hours of the morning to clear trash off the beach.
