Since 1994, Dr Tapan Kumar Lahiri has donated all of his salary to the needy. Today, at 70, he lives on his pension money and continues to serve the poor. Here is his story.

To help people in remote areas, several Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) have launched initiatives to provide medical assistance, food and essentials to COVID patients and their families.

Durai Prithviraj from Tamil Nadu founded Rajesh Udhavum Karangal, an NGO to offer free ambulance rides, shelter and meals for those below the poverty line or living in inaccessible and remote areas.

Once at midnight, a patient came with a serious heart attack. I had no proper equipment. There no hospital nearby and critical care was 150km away. I was scared because I knew that if he died, I would be thrown out. But then, if he was treated he had 90% chance to live, and if not, 100% chance of death. I chose the former!"
