Gir is the only home to Asiatic animals in the continent and as per the 2015 census, the lion population there was 523. Within three weeks, 23 big cats were reported dead and became a matter of rightful concern.
A few villagers heard her cries and immediately knew that something was wrong. They reached the ditch and after assessing the situation, called up the Uttarakhand forest department.
Over the past one year, the volunteers have planted about 8000 saplings on the once barren hill. They even took over the nurturing of plants and reported a survival rate of 98 percent!
Between the months of January and March, which encompass the breeding period of the turtles, these folks walk along the Devanampattinam coast at 3 a.m. with torchlights to spot turtle tracks.
