Born in Kaziranga, Assam, Manoj Gogoi developed a deep love for wildlife and has rescued over 6,000 animals since 2007. He works tirelessly to save animals, especially during floods.

Through his photos, photojournalist Karamjeet Singh has managed to capture a variety of endangered species. With his keen eye, he has photographed several elusive Himalayan species like the snow leopard and now leads many aspiring photographers on tours around the region.

These samaritans have set a remarkable benchmark for conservationists, and their work has been silently contributing to a rise in the numbers of the severely endangered turtle.

With the prize money, Dr Karnad plans to develop ‘SharkWatch’, a citizen-science programme, to record data on shark fishing and landings at major fishing harbours along the Coromandel coast.

The humpback mahseer, as it was unofficially called, was also nearly exhausted due to the introduction of new species into the Cauvery basin. A paper published in 2015 outlined how the humpback mahseer is under threat of imminent extinction.
