“On the one hand, I knew I wanted to make someone happy by giving them hair for a wig, but at the same time, I felt scared. I kept thinking of friends’ reaction. My mother kept telling me about all the blessings I would get for this, and I think that is what helped me.”
What started with four people today has a strong team of 10 members. Mikul says, “Everything fell into place; it was almost like this is how it was all meant to be.”
What happens to textbooks, guides, half-used books, and stationery once a student completes an academic year, he wondered. Well, they are thrown out or land up with the raddiwala.
“The books are then brought to our warehouse in West Delhi, which also doubles up as a library. We, along with the help of about 40 volunteers and interns, sort through every book, the ones that are torn, or not in good condition are sent for recycling while the good ones are stacked up for circulation.”

Looking back at the beginning of SADS, she says, “I started the organisation in 2015 when I was still employed with Accenture. I would go for pick-ups in the morning before heading to work, and with each pick and drop, my belief in wanting to start this organisation formally just kept getting stronger.”
