Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, made his first visit to Leh on 4 July 1949 at the invitation of the 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, the 'Architect of Modern Ladakh'.
The last time 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche saw his elder brother was in 1926 before he left for Tibet to complete his higher studies. But it was only 60 years later, when the brothers met in an emotional reunion.
He was not expected to fight the war and didn't even have enough ammunition to do so, but this unsung hero and his scouting unit notched up the first crucial win for the Indian Army in the Kargil conflict.
