Bhanu Athaiya

Making her foray into Bollywood as a costume designer in 1956, here's how Bhanu Athaiya went on to win the Oscar for India.

I have so far painted the portraits of Dr Vandana Shiva, Savitri Bai Phule, Kesarbai Kerkar, Tessy Thomas, Shakuntala Devi, Dr Mandakini Amte, Begum Hazrat Mahal, Janaki Ammal, Queen Velu Nachiyar and Bhanu Athaiya.

Bhanu Athaiya had made her foray into Bollywood as a costume designer for Guru Dutt’s film C.I.D in 1956 and went on to become the revered doyenne of Indian film costume designers.
