The Bay of Life Surf School & Ocean Literacy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, started by Showkath Jamal, is ensuring that you get a lesson in surfing and ocean safety along with a dose of wildlife preservation and pollution control.
Hailing from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, Omprakash ran away from his home as a teenager to colonial Bombay (now Mumbai) with almost no money. From working at a construction site near Chowpatty to selling items on a train, he juggled odd jobs until he saved enough to start a fruit stall by the beach.
“Like most others in my profession, there came a point where I wanted to do something different and did not want to get stuck in the same routine I was part of. Starting a hostel was never on my mind and yet it just happened.”
The Irrawaddy dolphin is native to Southeast Asia but has increasingly come under threat due to tourism and related activities. However, initiatives to conserve the species has helped reduce the effects of human activity.
