Today, at 17, Kerala-based Noor Jaleela is a budding artist who not only paints but also plays the violin, belts out songs melodiously and shares the stage with stalwarts such as KS Chithra and Stephen Devassy.

We are sure that if we start counting their numbers, we will run out of space. So, for the sake of brevity, here is a list of 12 exceptional women who have made India proud in recent years.

Bhanu Athaiya had made her foray into Bollywood as a costume designer for Guru Dutt’s film C.I.D in 1956 and went on to become the revered doyenne of Indian film costume designers.

Out of the 10,000 commercial pilots in the country, about 12 percent are women. Though the number might seem small, it is significantly higher than the global average of 5.4 percent!
