Rajesh & Vallari’s home is powered by the sun, covers nine months of water requirements through rainwater harvesting, grows 80 per cent of its food organically and is also car-free!

India is enriched with an immense amount of solar energy, and Srinivasa felt that while there were various players in the market, most of them were focused on a limited set of opportunities.

“The initiative is our attempt to save the environment and also encourage waste management among citizens. The vertical gardens which have been put up around the city have plastic holders, but we will soon replace them with recycled wood as well."

Interestingly, in India, Subabul wood is already being used as raw material for paper pulp.

This walk was part of a greater initiative titled India Heritage Walk Festival, a collaboration of Sahapedia and YES Arts & Culture.

These folks come from varied backgrounds; there are teachers, businesspeople, students and tea planters, but are bound by the love for native and rare orchids.

Initially, the family would take weekend trips to Sakleshpur, the quaint hill station in Karnataka known for its plantations and coffee, and live in tents inside the jungle.

The 220 sq ft home is equipped with solar panels for its energy needs, a sewage managing unit, and condensation coils that tap water from the air to meet household needs.

If the Konyaks can serve a sumptuous feast to hundreds without generating any non-biodegradable waste, then why can’t we?
