“It was very early on in life that I developed an interest in swimming. I remember there were so many villagers who would ask me how and why I am swimming but it was something that I enjoyed doing and therefore continued with it,” he recollects.

Suffice it to say, blood donation is the need of the hour. Despite its potential to save lives, many myths shroud the procedure of blood donation which makes people reluctant to donate their blood.

From the day she entered her aunt’s house, Anju was forced to do house chores. Her aunt would wake her at the crack of dawn and Anju’s first task was to prepare tea for 15 people. If she made a mistake, reprimands followed fast.

“Given the rigor and detailing that was needed to write the book—through the process the concepts I wrote about kept getting stronger,” she adds.

“The shredded plastic waste is used for the tarring of roads by mixing the plastic with bitumen. As for the plastic granules, they are sold to factories to make hose and pipes,” says Sahajan.

It was during a trip that Suhani, for the first time, saw the Bandhwari landfill and was shocked at its state. When Suhani read up on the various kinds of plastics she became alarmed at the statistics about the non-recyclable MLP.

The trust was trying to find a suitable donor for Jayakrishnan and the first step in that direction was to find someone from his family but Jayakrishnan is an orphan who has no family to speak of.

“It can be used to cut branches, douse fires in very high places by the fire department and even save someone who is drowning – there are multiple uses for it,” says the former professor at Kerala Agricultural University.

“Since many of such classroom projects never get this sort of exposure, I decided to enter the competition. Even if it would get some visibility, I knew I would get some collaborators to work with and that was basically my main intent.”
