One often finds that even the most underprivileged girls and women have a lot to express and contribute about gender issues if given the right platform, as an art workshop recently showed.

Often, traditional skills and learnings can be leveraged to generate income opportunities and livelihoods, particularly for underprivileged communities. A group of women from a South Delhi slum are doing just that through the traditional art of crocheting.

For many women working as helpers and/or cooks in urban households, skill development can go a long way towards improving their employability and prospects. Rupa, one such woman, decided to help her fellow workers by organising a cooking workshop to train them in different cuisines.

For many women living in urban slums, self-sustainability and independence from family and societal pressures is a mere pipe dream. However, these three women from South Delhi’s slums are challenging these pre-defined gender roles and making their mark boldly.
