Fifteen years ago, Nivrutti Shinde (93) made a promise to his wife, Shantabai. He promised to buy her gold. The couple hail from the Ambhora Jahagir in Jalna district. Their earnings from farming go into meeting their daily needs. Buying gold was a distant dream.
But Navrutti, a man of his word, had been saving up all these years so he could someday fulfil his promise. And he did — with Rs 20!
How?
Let’s backtrack.
A few days back, the couple was on their way to Pandharpur for the upcoming Ashadhi Ekadashi festival, one of the largest gatherings of its kind. They made a stop at a goldsmith, Gopika Jewellery in Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
Navrutti urged his wife to pick a mangalsutra (a sacred necklace worn by married women in India). The money he was able to eke out (denominations ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 500 to Rs 20) from his cloth bag and the pockets of his dhoti amounted to Rs 1120. He hoped this would be enough to buy the gold piece.
But Nilesh Khivansara, store owner, who was seeing to them, not only returned the money — keeping only Rs 20 as a token of payment — but also packed the chosen design, and urged Navrutti to give it to Shantabai himself.
Both husband and wife were in tears over the heartwarming gesture. “I had been telling my wife for the last 15 years that I would get her some gold jewellery. But I was not able to. The day before yesterday, when we went to the jewellery shop, the owner gave us the jewellery for free. It made us very happy,” Shinde shared.
The video won the hearts of many, not just those present at the shop who witnessed the kindness unfolding, but also millions of netizens who applauded the gesture.
