Bio-enzymes are natural and fermented cleaning solutions made from citrus fruit peels, jaggery (a form of unrefined sugar), and water. Through fermentation, naturally occurring bacteria break down the organic matter and release enzymes that effectively clean, deodorise, and remove stains.

They can be used to clean floors, bathrooms, kitchen surfaces, dishes, and even water plants. Unlike commercial cleaners, bio-enzymes are non-toxic, biodegradable, and free from synthetic chemicals.

How to make bio-enzyme cleaner at home

You will need:

  • 1 part jaggery (cut into small pieces or powdered)
  • 3 parts citrus peels (such as orange, lemon, or lime)
  • 10 parts water
  • A plastic bottle with an airtight cap
  • For example, if using a cup for measurement, add one cup of jaggery, three cups of citrus peels, and 10 cups of water.

Step 1: Prepare the jaggery solution

  • In a pan, mildly heat some water (do not boil).
  • Add the jaggery and stir until completely dissolved.
  • Let the solution cool to room temperature.

Step 2: Fill the plastic bottle

  • Tightly seal the bottle and store it in a cool, dry, and dark place.
  • For the first 30 days, open the cap twice a day to release built-up gases, a necessary step if your bottle has a narrow mouth.

Step 4: Wait and use

  • Let the solution ferment for 90 days.
  • After fermentation, strain the liquid into a clean bottle and use it as a natural cleaner.
  • To speed up future batches, use a small portion of the fermented liquid (from a previous batch) as an activator
