In this little-known town in Assam, every clang of hammer on bronze echoes 500 years of legacy.
For generations, the artisans of Sarthebari have been breathing life into kansa (bell metal) — crafting not just utensils and ceremonial items, but heritage you can hold.
From the sacred xorai to everyday bowls, each piece carries the warmth of tradition and the wisdom of the past.
But times are changing. With rising costs and machine-made imitations flooding the market, this ancient art stands at a crossroads. Still, the spirit of Sarthebari shines on — stronger than ever.
In March 2024, their craft was finally honoured with the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag — a proud win for India’s artisan community.
In a world of fast everything, Sarthebari reminds us: some things are worth preserving.
