Smart Designing Can Help Trees Get Their Share Of Rainwater - We Need This In India

New Update

In Zurich, pavements are smartly designed so rainwater doesn’t just run off — it seeps through dedicated channels, reaching the roots of trees planted along the streets.

The result? Healthy, thriving trees, even in the heart of the city.

Dr. Bikrant Tiwary, an IIM Calcutta alumnus, environmentalist, and CEO of Grow-Trees (which has planted over 10 million trees across India), recently shared a video showing how Zurich’s design respects both nature and infrastructure.

In many Indian cities, trees planted along footpaths often die young, suffocated under layers of cement that block vital rainwater from reaching their roots.

But with thoughtful design, we can change that. It’s a small shift in infrastructure, but a giant leap for sustainability.

A powerful reminder that urban growth doesn’t have to come at nature’s cost.
