In 2024, a tragic accident changed little Bani’s life forever. The baby elephant was barely a year old when she was hit by a speeding train in Uttarakhand.
She lay near the tracks—her tiny body battered, her spine fractured, and her legs severely wounded. Separated from her herd and unable to move, she waited—scared, helpless, and in unbearable pain.
Rescued by the Uttarakhand Forest Department and Wildlife SOS, she was found with severe spinal and hip injuries, deep wounds, and no movement in her hind limbs. Every moment of immobility put her tiny heart, lungs, and circulation at risk.
She was carefully transported to a rehabilitation centre, where a team of veterinarians and caregivers began the long and delicate process of her recovery.
Every day since has been a battle. She couldn’t stand, but she refused to give up. Intensive physiotherapy, laser treatments, and hydrotherapy sessions became part of her routine, helping her regain strength.
Ayurvedic massages soothed her wounds, while a specialised diet boosted her fragile immunity. Surrounded by love and care, Bani slowly began to heal.
Today, she is still under round-the-clock medical care, but she is no longer the helpless baby found on the tracks. She is fighting, learning, and taking small but determined steps toward recovery.
But here’s the hard truth: Bani’s suffering wasn’t an accident. In just two decades, 23 elephants have died in train collisions in Uttarakhand alone. Across India, 186 elephants have been killed on train tracks since 2009.
Wildlife corridors exist, but speeding trains and the lack of AI early-warning systems mean elephants don’t stand a chance. Indian Railways must act now. Reducing train speeds in wildlife corridors can save lives.
Stay tuned as we share more stories in collaboration with @wildlifesos, bringing you the voices of India’s voiceless. 🐘💙
