She left behind courtrooms and a high-flying law career to dive into the ocean’s depths.
Meet Archana Sankaranarayanan — India’s deepest female freediver — who broke 6 national records in the Philippines this May!
What sparked her leap? A spontaneous 2019 trip to the Andamans, a shallow reef, and a magical moment with clownfish that stirred something deeper than her 9-to-5 ever could.
“I realised I could be good at law, but perhaps I could excel at diving,” she says.
In 2020, Archana returned with renewed focus, earning advanced scuba certifications before discovering freediving through India’s top coach, Shubham Pandey.
Inspired, she trained in Bali in 2023, embracing a male-dominated sport.
By May 2025, she shattered six national records at two international competitions, hitting a personal best of 42 meters and setting a national record at 35 meters.
