Ladakh is Fighting Climate Change With Ice and an App

New Update

Ladakh is running low on water.
Glaciers are melting faster. And farming, once the backbone of these villages, is becoming increasingly difficult.

But instead of giving up, local communities are adapting. With support from HDFC Bank Parivartan, they’ve turned to a surprising yet simple idea: Ice Stupas. They’re artificial glaciers that store winter water as ice and release it slowly through spring when the fields need it most.

Between 2023 and 2025, seven new Ice Stupas were built across Ladakh, storing over 35 million litres of water. With automation and weather tracking, this once manual system is now smarter, more efficient, and ready for scale.
But the story doesn’t end with water.

Parivartan is also helping build solar-heated greenhouses that grow vegetables in sub-zero winters, supporting organic farming, and training villagers in eco-tourism and traditional crafts like pashmina wool weaving.
Solar energy powers homes and schools. Drip irrigation saves every drop. And across Ladakh, these innovations are helping communities grow more food, earn more income, and build climate resilience from the ground up.
All of this is part of HDFC Bank Parivartan’s broader mission to help communities thrive. In Ladakh, these interventions are making a visible difference, helping communities become more self-reliant, protecting livelihoods, and building resilience for the future.
