When America tried to patent haldi, Dr Raghunath Mashelkar said, “Not on my watch.”

In the 1990s, US researchers claimed turmeric’s healing powers as a ‘new’ discovery. But Mashelkar, then CSIR chief, fought back — digging into 2,500 years of Ayurvedic texts to prove otherwise.

The patent was revoked, sparking a revolution. He went on to create the TKDL — India’s digital shield against biopiracy of traditional knowledge.
