After nearly 20 years in captivity, Shankar, Delhi Zoo's lone African elephant, finally walks free!

Shankar, who arrived in India as a diplomatic gift from Zimbabwe in 1998, had been living alone in a small enclosure, a condition that raised concerns about his welfare.

The situation even led to the suspension of the zoo’s membership by the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA)

A dedicated team of experts, including specialists from the Ministry of Environment, Vantara (a Jamnagar-based wildlife facility), and international veterinary professionals, worked together to assess his condition and create a rehabilitation plan.

Through a combination of behavioural training and improved living conditions, Shankar was successfully freed from his chains.

As he adjusts to his newfound freedom, strict protocols are in place to ensure his well-being and to prevent further mistreatment of animals.
