In a quiet corner of Kannur, Aaralam has just been declared India’s first official butterfly sanctuary. A title it’s earned one flutter at a time through years of dedicated surveys, patient researchers, and nature lovers who never stopped believing.

Over 266 species have been recorded here. Some endangered. Some endemic.

Every year, from December to February, these delicate pollinators follow rivers and sunlight down from the hills in a breathtaking migration. Hundreds at a time, from one leaf to another, tracing invisible trails across the forest.

According to Aaralam Wildlife Warden G. Pradeep, new species are still being discovered.

Because this sanctuary isn’t just a place—it’s a promise. That even the smallest wings deserve the biggest protection.
