A train ride that’s over a century old and still one of the most breathtaking ways to explore the Nilgiris.
The Nilgiri Mountain Railway isn’t just a train. It’s a time capsule wrapped in mist and memory, climbing through the Western Ghats from Mettupalayam to Ooty since 1908.
Built by the British and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this 46 km route takes you across 250 bridges, 208 curves, and 16 tunnels.
The journey begins at dawn, with a steam engine puffing through dense forests and tea estates, pausing at quaint hill stations before reaching the cool, green slopes of Ooty.
Every turn, every tunnel is a quiet reminder that some of the best journeys take time.
If you’ve never sat by its window or leaned out into the mountain wind, maybe it’s time you did.
