On January 15, 1949, Lieutenant General K. M. Cariappa took over from General Sir Francis Butcher, thus becoming the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. In order to honour that historic occasion and the brave men and women who have served this nation, January 15 is celebrated as Army Day every year.
