Women commuters who travel between Churchgate and Virar suburban railway stations in Mumbai can now feel safe with a new app launched by the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The app is called ‘Eyewatch Railways’ which has an alert button.

Women in trouble can tap the alert button or press their phone’s power button four times to notify the RPF Control Center for immediate help.

Their chosen call guardians also receive a text message at the same time.

The app also lets the RPF view the user's updated location until the time she reaches a safe place. The user gets immediate help by being able to send her location, video or audio information to the RPF, so they know about her whereabouts and the kind of situation she's in. The RPF then sends personnel from the nearest station to rescue the woman.

The app has been downloaded by over 1 lakh users so far, reports NDTV. The app also displayed the battery status, network signal strength of the phone, blood group and other important information related to the emergency.

“The eight chosen guardians, doctors and security personnel also receive the alert SMS and automatically a phone call is made to the them (guardians). It functions only when a commuter uses it while on railway premises," chief PRO of Western Railway Ravinder Bhakar told NDTV.
