In order to make the surroundings of Kerala’s Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary free of pollution and more welcoming for tourists, the Forest Department in the region has introduced a project under which battery-operated auto rickshaws will make their debut.

Starting with Thekkady, which is one of the most sought after tourist destinations in Kerala, the department plans on expanding the initiative to other regions shortly.

Through this, they intend to curb the carbon footprint caused by public vehicles in the forest area and offer an environment-friendly experience for the travellers.

The service can be availed between Thekkady’s check post and the boat landing and can seat five persons comfortably, reports Manorama.

This is not the first time that the region’s Forest Department has embarked on such a project. The department has been passionately working towards introducing various eco-friendly measures to keep a check on pollution.

They had previously tried to introduce electrically powered vehicles that could take travellers from the parking ground at Anavechal to Thekkady.

However, the project didn’t find the light of the day following a complaint filed with the National Green Tribunal that put the initiative on a halt.
