This Railway Station Is Run By People, For People

Rajasthan’s Rashidpura Khori is one of India's most unique railway stations.

For it is run and maintained solely by villagers, and not railway staff!

Almost a century old, the station has had a stop-start history.

Railways stopped operations at the British-era station in May 2005 as it was deemed commercially unviable.

The disheartened residents kept appealing to Railways to continue services in some manner.

So Railways relented, but with conditions.

Villagers could keep Rashidpura Khori functional if they managed to generate adequate revenue.

So the village gave a memorandum (to railways) that its 25,000 residents would run the station and meet this revenue target!

What followed was a door-to-door campaign publicising train schedules and seeking people’s cooperation in meeting the monthly target.

A few residents were designated to sell tickets, and the rest joined hands to maintain the station.

The villagers have been running the station ever since, taking care of every aspect, including cleanliness and fines!
