World Breastfeeding Week (1 to 7 August) urges stronger support for nursing moms — and it starts with safe, private feeding zones in public spaces across India.
Breastfeeding in public often means judgment and discomfort. Moms say India needs more clean, private spaces in malls, stations, and even offices.
Mothers like Dr Nidhi Tiwari (Lucknow), journalist Swagata Majumdar (Bengaluru), and wildlife enthusiast Rupak Yadav (Kadapa) stress the need for hygienic spaces for breastfeeding and diaper-changing.
Malls: Many malls now offer nursing rooms, but moms say they are not enough. Every shopping centre should provide clean, private spaces for breastfeeding.
Airports and stations: Travelling moms often struggle to find privacy. Airports, railway waiting rooms, and bus terminals need well-equipped feeding zones immediately.
Workplaces: While some offices have nursing stations, most still don’t. For working moms, a clean, private feeding space is a basic necessity — not a luxury.
Cultural and religious spaces: Temples, churches, theatres, and community halls should include feeding rooms next to restrooms. Moms shouldn’t have to choose between faith and comfort.
Everyday public spaces: Parks, restaurants, passport offices, banks, and government buildings must have nursing rooms. Errands don’t pause for motherhood.
Would India be more breastfeeding-friendly if every public place had a feeding zone next to restrooms? Moms say yes. What do you think?
