On 12 April 2023, Sudhir Krishnan’s dream came true as he trekked to Everest Base Camp, defying the odds of living with Parkinson’s. “It was an explosion of emotions. I was laughing and sobbing at the same time,” he says.

This was possible thanks to ‘Bohemian Adventures’, a trekking company founded by three friends — Anusha Subramanian, Shashi Bahuguna, and Guneet Puri. Their mission is to make adventure accessible to all, regardless of age, illness, or disability.

The trio met through their love for the mountains. “Anusha, a former journalist, and I met in 2009 during a mountaineering course,” recalls Guneet. Their paths later crossed with Shashi, an ex-banker, in Uttarakhand.

In 2013, Anusha and Guneet volunteered in rescue efforts after the Kedarnath disaster. Shashi joined them on an expedition, and they bonded over a shared vision — mountaineering should be for everyone. That’s how Bohemian Adventures was founded.

“I am an asthma patient and I have a close understanding of how people with such illness find it difficult to function,” says Anusha. Determined to change this, the trio created an inclusive trekking space for those with disabilities and illnesses

Their treks are meticulously planned. “We look into their illness and see what precautions we need to take. We also consult with experts, to understand how their medications might react on high altitudes,” explains Anusha. A 1:3 guide-to-trekker ratio ensures personalised attention.

Bohemian Adventures has led treks for people with autism, visual impairments, asthma, and Parkinson’s. Their oldest trekker was 80, their youngest just seven. “No one is too old or too young to trek,” says Shashi.

Their approach is flexible and they customise treks based on our participants’ needs. “Since we travel with people with illnesses and disabilities, safety is paramount,” adds Shashi.

They’ve conquered peaks like Mount Kilimanjaro, Hemkund Sahib, Stok Kangri, and Mount Rudugaira. “The mountains look at all of us the same way, so why can’t we?” asks Guneet.

For Bohemian Adventures, adventure is for everyone. “When a person tells a travel company they have an illness, they often get a hesitant ‘yes’ or a straight ‘no’. We want to give them a confident ‘yes’,” says Guneet.
