Characterised by black fur and grey mane, lion-tailed macaques are Old World monkey species native to the Western Ghats mountain range of South India. Lion-tailed macaques are primarily herbivores, feeding on fruits, leaves, buds, flowers, seeds, and occasionally insects.

The Nilgiri tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) is a species of ungulate found in the Western Ghats of South India, specifically in the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. They have a shaggy coat that varies in colour from dark brown to reddish-brown.

Also known as the Kashmir stag, the hangul is a unique subspecies of the Asian red deer. They are herbivores, feeding on a variety of plants, grasses, leaves, and shrubs found in their habitat and prefer living altitudes ranging from 1,700 to 4,000 metres.

The Gangetic Dolphins, as per wwf.org, “are one of the oldest creatures in the world along with some species of turtles, crocodiles and sharks.” They can only live in freshwater and hunt by emitting ultrasonic sounds that bounce off of fish and other prey.

The Sangai, also known as the Manipur brow-antlered deer or the dancing deer, is characterised by uniquely distinctive antlers. The Sangai has a dark reddish brown winter coat that turns into a paler version of the colour in the summer.

“The greater one-horned rhino is identified by a single black horn about 8-25 inches long and a grey-brown hide with skin folds, which gives it an armour-plated appearance,” notes wwf.org. They are herbivores, feeding mainly on grasses, leaves, stems, and aquatic vegetation.

The Indian giant squirrel, scientifically known as Ratufa indica, is a large and colourful tree squirrel species found in the forests of India. These squirrels are agile climbers and are capable of leaping long distances between trees. They are most active during the day, foraging for food and engaging in social interactions.

The only marten species that is native to South India, Nilgiri Martens are slender-bodied carnivores with a long, bushy tail. It is a skilled climber and hunter, and feeds on a variety of small animals, including rodents, birds, lizards, insects, and fruits.
