While West Bengal may be partially spared, any shift in the storm's trajectory could heighten its impact. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of the IMD, noted that southern West Bengal will be affected, underscoring the importance of continued monitoring.
Residents in these regions must take proactive measures to protect themselves, their families, and their properties. Here are some safety tips:
Prepare for the cyclone 1. Shift to a cyclone-resistant place: If you live in an older building, seek shelter in a safer location designed to withstand strong winds and heavy rain.
2. Keep your emergency kit handy: Pack a kit with first-aid supplies, a battery-operated torch and extra batteries, important documents like ration card, Aadhaar card, and voter ID card, drinking water, and emergency food such as biscuits.
3. Protect your vehicle: Consider parking your vehicle in a covered area or behind a sturdy wall. This will help shield your vehicle from strong winds and flying debris.
4. Essential preparations for the elderly: Make sure elderly individuals have a list of important phone numbers. Gather all necessary medications and keep them in an easy-to-reach spot. Consider arranging safe transportation if evacuation is required.
5. Kid-friendly cyclone readiness: Practise a quick evacuation plan with your kids in a fun way to prepare them for the cyclone. Explain the situation in a simple way to help them understand. You can pack a bag with their favourite snacks, books, and games to keep them entertained and comfortable.
6. Protect your pets and plants: Prepare a pet kit with food, water, and medications for emergency situations. Consider a safe space for them to help them feel secure during the storm. Ensure they have collars with ID tags and microchips. Keep your plants indoors, preferably near windows or spaces with adequate sunlight.
7. Turn off electrical devices: To reduce the risk of fire, switch off all electrical devices and unplug them if you can. Power lines can break during strong winds and heavy rain, so it’s better to be safe.
8. Keep your doors and windows shut: It might be tempting to open them to feel the wind, but keep everything sealed. Properly shutting windows and doors helps protect your home from damage.
9. Consider switching off your gas regulator: Strong winds can cause debris to hit your house, which could damage gas pipes. Keeping the gas regulator off will help prevent any fire hazards.
