Tanveer Inamdar, a former engineer, transformed the lives of the Katkari and Kunbi tribal communities in Maharashtra by providing them with solar and hydroelectric power.
Through his TREEI Foundation, he initially focussed on water solutions in 2018 but soon realised the critical need for electricity in these areas.
In 2022, Tanveer launched ‘Mission Urja’, introducing portable and tailored electricity solutions depending on the geographic and living conditions of each village.
Portable solar panels are uniquely designed to be lightweight and durable, essential for the migratory lifestyle of many tribal families in the region.
The introduction of solar power has enabled the use of electric bulbs, fans, and the charging of mobile phones. This drastically improved the daily life of tribal families.
The solar units are automatic, activating at sunset, and have transformed dark evenings into lively, illuminated nights, increasing safety and comfort.
Since the inception of Mission Urja, families have escaped the cycle of exorbitant fees for illegal electricity connections.
Tanveer’s initiative has illuminated the lives of 1,458 tribal families across multiple villages in Valni, Maale, Kurudwadi, Kashing, and Shere villages of Mulshi Taluka.
“Imagine visiting a village at night, where it’s cloaked in complete darkness around seven or eight pm. Fast forward a few months, and the same village is glowing with light,” says Tanveer.
“People are outside, enjoying themselves and chit-chatting with neighbours. This transformation evokes a profound feeling and emotion within me,” he adds.
