Sonali Ghosh made history on 1 September 2023 as she became the first woman to be appointed Field Director of Kaziranga National Park in Assam.

Born in Pune in 1975, Sonali’s childhood was filled with travel and a deep connection and moving cities with her army background father gave her a unique perspective on life.

Though her interest in biology began in school, Sonali found her true calling when she won a scholarship for wildlife science at the prestigious Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun.

Her hands-on training at Kaziranga over two decades ago shaped her passion for wildlife conservation. “Combined with teaching and active discussions with the country’s top wildlife scientists and researchers at the institute, helped nurture a sense of dedication and pursuit of excellence that has fortunately stayed on,” she says.

In a male-dominated field, Sonali often faced societal hurdles. "In those days, the ideal woman was expected to pursue a good education, perhaps find employment, but most crucially, prioritise marriage," she reflects, but her supportive parents helped her push past these constraints.

As a young Assistant Conservator of Forest, Sonali was the only woman in the field. "Develop a Rhino-like thick skin," she advises, recalling the challenges of proving herself in a predominantly male environment.

Sonali’s journey has never been easy. As a mother, she often had to spend months away from her family, but the strong bond with her loved ones kept her grounded through the toughest times.

Before becoming Field Director, Sonali served as DFO in Kokrajhar, managing wildlife like the Golden Langur. She also worked at Manas National Park, which shaped her approach to conservation and governance.

Kaziranga is where it all started for Sonali, and it is where she feels most at home. She recalls being chased by a rhino 20 years ago — back then, she even climbed a tree to escape!

As Field Director, Sonali's priorities are clear: protect wildlife, strengthen rhino conservation, and support the dedicated forest staff. "The first priority is protection; the second is the welfare of our frontline staff," she says.

With her leadership, Sonali is focused on sustainable tourism and working closely with local communities to balance conservation with livelihoods.

To all young women who love nature and want to challenge the idea that women are made for ‘softer’ jobs, Sonali has one piece of advice: “The sky's the limit!"
